This flashy and gorgeous wine is characterized by sharp spiciness, plush fruit, and soul-satisfying earthiness. A perfect growing season that produced long warm to hot days and cool evenings brought this Syrah harvest to a close in early October.
We continued our long standing relationship with the acclaimed Unti Vineyard in Sonoma County. Unti Vineyards is located in the heart of the Dry Creek Valley right outside the town of Healdsburg. The Unti’s are well-known for their uncompromised farming practices especially on Rhone varietals. Since the beginning of our program, we have worked very closely with the Unti’s to dial in the optimal farming practices for our vineyard blocks. In 2004, we harvested from the same vineyard block strategy as in previous years bringing in fruit for two distinct blocks near the front of the vineyard away from Dry Creek which runs a long the vineyard’s backside. These two blocks are comprised of shorter rows and hence, more even ripeness throughout.
The use of new oak in aging our Syrahs has become the backbone of the wine. We utilized primarily brand new French and American oak as well as one year old French oak to add the subtle layers of sweet toastiness. Our goal at Longfellow is to make unique wines, but ones that are true to their varietal heritage. The 2004 Syrah is once again an exquisite example of achieving this goal.

“This wine begs to be decanted. Deep ruby color lead to spicy aromas or white pepper, paraffin, and smoked meats. A blast of lush and ripe dark cherry fruit give way to rich flavors of coffee, chocolate, and vanilla scented oak. Supple tannins provide shelter for its long and distinctive finish”
